SKILLMAN, N.J. - Another season, same results for the Armstrong Atlantic State University men's and women's varsity tennis teams. The AASU teams are already 10 matches into the spring season and still remain No. 1 in the Division II Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings, right where the left off at the end of the 2009 campaign, which saw both squads hoist the NCAA Division II team title for the second year in a row. Both teams are undefeated and for the first time in 2010, AASU swept the weekly tennis honors this week as Mikk Irdoja was named the Peach Belt Conference Men's Player of the Week and ITA All-Star and 2009 ITA Small College Super Bowl Singles Champion, Sona Novakova was chosen as the women's candidate. Novakova and the Lady Pirates have a showdown with No. 2-ranked Lynn University in their next match on Friday, March 5. AASU has met Lynn in each of the last two seasons for the DII National Championship and the Knights were the only team to defeat the Lady Pirates last season, during the regular season. Conference Count: Men's Top 25: Peach Belt - 7; Gulf South and Sunshine State - 4; Heartland and Lone Star - 2; Carolinas, GLIAC, GLVC, MAIAA, NYCAC and Pacific West - 1. The Gulf South, Peach Belt and Sunshine State Conferences each placed three teams among the top 11. Women's Top 25:Sunshine State - 6; Peach Belt - 4; Gulf South and Lone Star - 3; CCAA, Heartland and Pacific West - 2, GLIAC, GLVC and PSAC - 1. The Gulf South and Sunshine State Conferences each have three teams among the top 10. Twice as Nice: An astounding 16 schools have both their men's and women's programs ranked inside this week's top 25 led by Armstrong Atlantic with both squads ranked No. 1.
Mark Your Calendar: This year's NCAA Division II Championship, featuring the final 16 men's and women's teams face off, takes place May 12-15 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida, hosted by Rollins College and the Central Florida Sports Commission.
