North Carolina Women join Virginia Men atop
Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings
SKILLMAN, N.J. – The North Carolina women’s team, which recently lost to Northwestern in the 2010 ITA National Women’s Team Indoors, jumped the Wildcats to capture this week’s top spot in the Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings after Notre Dame handed former No. 1 NU its first loss of the season, 5-2. Coincidentally, that’s the same score that UNC beat Notre Dame in the first week of the spring season. The women have had a different team claim the top spot for the past consecutive week.
On the men’s side, Virginia, which also lost early in the season to eighth-ranked Kentucky, dominated the Men’s Team Indoor event as the host institution, hoisting their third-straight trophy and propelling them to No. 1. The Cavaliers easily held a tight grip on the top spot with convincing 7-0 sweeps over LSU and Boston College.
Follow the Leader: For the men, following Virginia is (in order): Tennessee, Ohio State, Texas, USC, Florida, UCLA, Kentucky, Georgia and Louisville. On the women's side, North Carolina is followed by: Northwestern, California, UCLA, Baylor, Duke, Notre Dame, Michigan, Florida and USC.
Conference Count: Men's Top 25: ACC and Pac-10 – 6; SEC – 5; Big 12 – 3; Big Ten – 2; Big East, Conference USA and WCC - 1. All six of the BCS Conferences placed at least one team in the top 10, with five SEC teams claiming five of the top 11 spots. Women’s Top 25: SEC – 7; ACC – 6; Pac-10 – 5; Big Ten – 4; Big East - 2 and Big 12 and Conference USA - 1. The women’s top 10 also has all six BCS Conferences represented, while four Pac-10 schools from the Golden State (California, USC, UCLA and Stanford) are among the top 11.
On the Move: Thanks to the Irish’ biggest win in program history Sunday with a 5-2 victory over No. 1 Northwestern, Notre Dame made the largest and most important jump in this week’s women’s rankings, climbing 10 spots from 17th to seventh. It was the first time Notre Dame had ever beaten the country's top-ranked team, and the first time since 2007 that the Irish had taken down the Wildcats.
On the men’s side, a couple of teams really picked up steam this week that included top-ranked wins over their respective rivals. The Cal Bears have been arguably the most surprising team in the country this year. On Sunday, they beat their third-straight ranked opponent and already their seventh of the year, with a hard-fought win over in-state conference rival, Stanford. Stanford, previously ranked No. 8, was California’s first win over a top-10 ranked team after being swept by fourth-ranked Texas at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The win bumped the Bears up twelve spots, while the Cardinal fell out of the top 10 to No. 14. Oklahoma made the most movement but just missed the cut, coming in at No. 26, with an impressive showing this weekend, taking down Oklahoma State in the Bedlam matchup and knocking Alabama out of the top 25, with its second upset loss on the season.
Twice as Nice: Fourteen schools have both their men’s and women’s programs ranked inside this week’s top 25.
