Falconi, Singh top spots in singles; Stanford, Tennessee 1-2 in doubles

SKILLMAN, N.J. – One week after being replaced by North Carolina atop the Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings, Northwestern has regained the top spot, joining the Virginia men, who have been perched at No. 1 for the third-consecutive week, since capturing the ITA National Men’s Team Indoor title.

Northwestern also captured the ITA Team Indoor title at the women’s championship, knocking off North Carolina to vault to No. 1. Their stay would be short-lived though as Notre Dame handed the Wildcats their first loss on the season and switched positions in the rankings with North Carolina.

The battle between North Carolina has since progressed off the court and into the rankings as Northwestern has once again moved ahead of the Tar Heels this week, just edging UNC for the No. 1 ranking. This is now the fourth-straight week that a different team has claimed the top spot.

This is the point in the season when the Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings switch from a poll to a computer point-per-match formula, which causes several changes throughout the rankings.

Follow the Leader:
For the men, following Virginia is (in order): Tennessee, Ohio State, Texas, USC, UCLA, Florida, Kentucky, Stanford and California. On the women's side, Northwestern is followed by: North Carolina, Notre Dame, UCLA, California, Florida, Michigan, Duke, Baylor and Clemson.

Conference Count: Men's Top 25: SEC– 6; Big 12 and SEC – 5; ACC – 4; Big Ten – 2; Big East, Conference USA and Mountain West - 1. Four Pac-10 schools from the Golden State (USC, UCLA, Stanford and California) are among the top 10. Women’s Top 25: ACC – 6; Pac-10 and SEC – 5; Big East and Big Ten – 3; Big 12, Conference USA and Mountain West – 1. The women’s top 10 has all six BCS Conferences represented.

On the Move: The biggest surprise in this week’s rankings is also the beneficiary of the biggest jump. The BYU men’s team jumped 22 spots since last week and 41 spots since the preseason rankings which came out in early January. The Cougars latest victim was perennial power Boise State, which incidentally took one of the worst hits in this week’s rankings, dropping 29 spots to No. 58. The win over the Broncos gave BYU its seventh victory already over a team currently ranked in the top 75.

On the women’s team, there were no teams in the top 25 that shifted up more than nine spots but two teams did enter the rankings for the first time this season as South Florida and UNLV each moved into the top 25 from Nos. 29 and 30, respectively.

Twice as Nice: Eleven schools have both their men’s and women’s programs ranked inside this week’s top 25.
