UNC,
Virginia remain No. 1 in Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings
Falconi, Johnson top spots in singles; Tennessee, Stanford 1-2 in doubles
SKILLMAN, N.J. - In the ever-changing women's team rankings, North Carolina has provided a little bit of stability by holding onto No. 1 in the Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings for the second straight week. Meanwhile, the Virginia men continue to hold the top spot for the seventh-straight week, since capturing the ITA Men's Team Indoor title, but are cognizant of the hard-charging Ohio State Buckeyes who leaped past Tennessee into second.
Even though the Tar Heels were top-ranked at the beginning of what has turned out to be a March Madness in the women's team rankings, they recently captured their first-ever victory as the nation's No. 1 team. And they did so in dramatic fashion, avenging a loss to second-ranked Northwestern, in what was a rematch from the ITA Women's Team Indoor Finals.
Just as it did when the teams met in the final in February, the doubles point came down to the top position. The Northwestern duo of Lauren Lui and Maria Mosolova eventually completed the comeback and won in a tiebreak, 9-8 (6). The setback did not appear to affect the Tar Heels, however, as the hosts ran out to early leads on four of six singles courts. It was the bottom of the lineup, a strength for much of the season for UNC, that finally put Northwestern away.
In a dog-eat-dog season in which the top women's programs continue to beat up on one another, the top eight teams in the Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings continue to be separated by a mere 10 points.
