 #1 VIRGINIA: Top-ranked Virginia (11-0) began its quest for a fourth consecutive ITA National Team Indoor Championship with a 4-1 victory over No. 29 Washington Friday night at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. In doubles, the Cavaliers debuted three new pairings to take the opening point from the host Huskies (6-3). Michael Shabaz and Alex Domijan topped No. 24 Kyle McMorrow and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan 8-3 at the top spot. Steven Rooda and Drew Courtney teamed at No. 3 to defeat Marton Bots and Daniel Schmidt 8-3 to clinch the doubles point. In singles, the Cavaliers, who have five players ranked in the top 25 of the Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings, took the early edge by winning all six first sets. The Virginia lead was extended to 2-0 as No. 2-ranked Domijan defeated McMorrow 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 2 position. Courtney made the score 3-0 with his 7-5, 6-3 win over Tobi Obenaus. However, the Huskies forced third sets in the other four matches. Washington cut the lead to 3-1 with Martin Kildahl's 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Singh at No. 3 but the Huskies hope quickly faded as Julen Uriguen closed out the Cavalier win with his 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 victory at No. 6. Virginia faces the 9th-ranked Illini tomorrow in a rematch which saw the top-ranked Cavs post a dominating 7-0 shutout  in Charlottesville on Jan. 21.

#3 TENNESSEE:  In the only matchup that featured two conference foes squaring off against one another, tension filled the air in a hard-fought match that lasted more than four hours, with the Vols' three seniors leading the way to a 4-2 victory over Georgia. Three of the six singles matches lapsed into third sets, and senior Matteo Fago rallied from behind in the final frame to defeat 31st-ranked Sadio Doumbia 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (1) to clinch the Tennessee's win on court 3. The opening round conference match between the long-time SEC rivals marked the first time the schools had faced each other on neutral courts in a decade. When Tennessee last faced Georgia, it was in the semifinals of the 2010 NCAA Championships, and the doubles point was decided with a tiebreaker on the final court. At the ITA National Team Indoors, the story was just the same. With everything coming down to court 1, which featured a finals rematch of the SEC Indoor Championships, UT's Boris Conkic and John-Patrick Smith and UGA's Javier Garrapiz and Hernus Pieters 8-5, provided a very entertaining rematch in which the Vols prevailed to claim the doubles point, 9-8 [2]. In singles, the Vols faced the challenge of playing without Sandgren in the lineup to due a fever. Matteo Fago stepped into Sandgren's spot, followed by Conkic at 4 and Ed Jones at 5. Freshman Jarryd Chaplin had to make his debut in UT's lineup on court 6, where he lost to Pieters 6-1, 6-4 to tie the match 1-1. Conkic gave the Vols the lead at 2-1 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Drake Bernstein, but Georgia tied the match at 2-2 when Taboada broke Jones late in the second set to win 6-4, 7-5 on court 5. Smith on court 2 and Fago on court 3 had both lost their first sets, but the two seniors did not flinch. Smith, ranked 17th, was down a break in the second set but stormed back to beat 12th-ranked Spencer 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 to give the Vols a 3-2 lead. Fago, playing in the top half of the lineup for the first time since his sophomore season, lost the first set 6-2 to Doumbia on court three before rallying to take the second set 7-5 but faced a match point in the third set while serving at 5-4. The senior was able to hold on and eventually force a tiebreaker, winning it 7-2 to send to the Vols to the quarterfinals.

#4 OHIO STATE: Even though the third-seeded Buckeyes posted a 4-1 victory over No. 14 Texas Tech, the match was more competitive than the score reflected. The Red Raiders won two of the three doubles matches to grab a 1-0 lead over the Buckeyes. The No. 59 Texas Tech duo of Gonzalo Escobar and Vitor Manzini topped Ohio State's No. 10 doubles pair, Matt Allare and Peter Kobelt, 8-5 to clinch the first point of the match and give some hope for the Raiders, who were facing a Buckeye team that leads the ITA Men's Team Indoor field with seven players ranked in the top 125 in the Campbell/ITA singles rankings. OSU quickly bounced back after some inspiring words from Coach Ty Tucker to his players. The motivation seemed to work as Ohio State won four of the six singles matches to push the Big Ten's best to the next roundmatch win. At No. 1 singles, OSU's No. 5 Blaz Rola stopped No. 18 Gonzalo Escobar, 6-3, 6-3, to even the match at 1-1. Buckeye Balazs Novak defeated Red Raider Raphael Pfister at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-0 while No. 55 Devin McCarthy downed Tech's Gabriel Wanderley, 6-3, 6-4 to build the Buckeye lead to 3-1. Ohio State ended Texas Tech's upset plans when No. 45 Matt Allare prevailed in a tight match over Vitor Manzini, 7-6, 6-4.

#5 TEXAS: Texas senior Ed Corrie registered a timely service break of Kentucky's third-ranked Eric Quigley and defeated the UK All-American to preserve a 4-2 Longhorns victory over the 12th-ranked WildcatsTexas (8-0) claimed matches at the first and second doubles slots to secure the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead before Kentucky would bounce back even the score with a win at second singles, where UT's Andersen fell victim to Kentucky's 70th-ranked Alex Musialek, 6-2, 7-6.  The Wildcats' Tom Jomby put Kentucky on top with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 win over Daniel Whitehead at sixth singles before the Longhorns would sawn their rally caps. At third singles, UT's Damico dropped the first set to UK's Cox, but Damico took control from there and won the next two sets, 6-3, 6-2 to even the match at two. Texas' Mladenov put the Horns on top for good at fifth singles, where he dealt the Wildcats' 79th-ranked Anthony Rossi a 7-5, 6-3 defeat to give UT a 3-2 lead. The Corrie-Quigley match at first singles proved to be the deciding point in the Longhorns' favor. Corrie took the first set, 6-3 before Quigley answered to take set two, 6-4.  At 4-all in the final set, Corrie fought off several break points and held serve for a 5-4 lead. With Quigley serving 15-40, Corrie managed to register the final service break he needed, closing out the final set and the match for the men in orange.

#6 UCLA: The sixth-seeded Bruins ended the day as the only team from Los Angeles that will be playing in Saturday's quarterfinals after registering a 4-1 opening-round victory over No. 11 Louisville at the Seattle Tennis Club. UCLA (8-0) had a great start to Friday's match, claiming wins at court Nos. 2 and 3 to take the doubles point. Puget then gave UCLA a 2-0 advantage not long after singles began, as he was a 6-0, 6-3 winner at court No. 5. The Bruins' lead then jumped to 3-0 after Amit Inbar quickly dispatched Viktor Maksimcuk, 6-3, 6-3 at court No. 2. Just when it looked like UCLA was going to run away with it, the Cardinals (8-2) managed to get on the board when 2010 NCAA Singles Runner-Up Austen Childs notched a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 63 Daniel Kosakowski at court No. 1. Needing to win just one of the final three matches to pull out the win, UCLA got what it needed at court No. 4, where Holden Seguso downed Alejandro Calligari, 6-3, 6-2 to clinch the victory for the Bruins. Seguso's win would prove key for UCLA, which was trailing at court Nos. 3 and 6 when play was suspended.

#8 ILLINOIS: The eighth-seeded Illini proved its resiliency once again in singles and defeated No. 9-seed Texas A&M, 4-1, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Team Indoor Championship.  The Illini will face three-time defending champion and No.1 seed Virginia.  The Illini nearly won the doubles battle, as the decision came down to the No. 1 spot where seniors Abe Souza and Johnny Hamui were up 7-6 against No. 1 Austin Krajicek and Jeff Dadamo.  The top-ranked duo rallied back, however, securing the next two games to clinch the doubles point for the aggies.   In singles, sophomores KU Singh and Stephen Hoh collected straight sets victories to give Illinois a 2-1 advantage.  No. 65 Souza and sophomore Bruno Abdelnour each battles back in their matches after dropping the first set with Abdelnour recording the deciding point to give the Illini the 4-1 win.

#10 FLORIDA: The 10th-seeded Florida men's tennis team opened the ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship with a nail-biter of a 4-3 win against No. 7-seed Stanford, marking the 400th victory of head coach Andy Jackson's career. The Gators improve to 7-1 on the season and advance to the event's quarterfinals for the second consecutive year. The Gators got on the board first with the doubles point, as Sekou Bangoura Jr. and Andrew Butz posted an 8-5 court two victory before Billy Federhofer and Bob van Overbeek earned the clincher, 8-6, on court three. Federhofer was first off the singles courts for UF, winning 6-2, 6-2 against Matt Kandath at No. 6. Denis Lin then gave Stanford its first point of the night, topping van Overbeek on court four, but Bangoura pushed the UF advantage to 3-1, taking a 6-4, 6-2 win over No. 52 Ryan Thacher on court two. Stanford refused to go away, as Greg Hirshman posted a court five win against Spencer Newman and Clayton defeated Slilam to set up the final fireworks between two top-10 ranked players in Florida's ninth-ranked Alexandre Lacroix and Stanford's seventh-ranked Bradley Klahn, the defending NCAA singles champion. With UF holding a 3-2 edge, Lacroix went down a break early in the set as Nassim Slilam tried to force a third set on court three against No. 64 Alex Clayton. Lacroix was able to rally from a 2-1 deficit, winning five of the final six games to claim the decisive set, 6-3 and boosting the Frenchman head-to-head record against Klahn to 2-0, having also defeated him in the Round of 16 at the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships.

#15 DUKE: Senior Reid Carleton fought off match point in a comeback victory that helped the 17th-ranked Blue Devils knock off the two-time defending national champions and No. 2 Southern California, 4-3, in the first round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Seattle, Wash. Trailing 5-3 and facing match point, No. 6 Carleton found a way to get back in the match and force a second set tiebreaker. After controlling play for a 7-3 tiebreaker win he went to a third and final set with No. 16 Daniel Nguyen, the player who clinched each of Southern California's back-to-back national championship victories. The score was tied at 3-3 in the third when Carleton utilized his off-season fitness training to his advantage and won three straight games to clinch the match and send Duke on to the quarterfinals. The Blue Devils got off to a slow start by dropping the doubles point for just the third time in 10 matches this season. No. 10 Henrique Cunha was in a dual with another top 10 player in No. 4 Steve Johnson at the No. 1 spot in the order. It was a rematch of the deciding match last season in Duke's 4-3 upset victory over the No. 3 Trojans when Cunha was ranked ninth and clinched the victory by taking a second-set tiebreaker to knock off the top-ranked Johnson in straight sets. This time around Cunha again pulled out the second-set tiebreaker after facing match point but Johnson was too strong in the third set, claiming a 6-2 win to knot the score at 3-3 before Carleton's fantastic finale. Carleton became the ninth player in school history to record at least 20 singles victories in four straight seasons. He is now 20-4 on the season with 12 victories coming against ranked players.
