Seeds Continue to Fall at Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. (Oct. 4) - Day two of main draw action at the 2013 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships played out much like the first day, as the tournament's top players fell like flies to the depth of the field. At the end of Friday's play, only the top two singles seeds, Robin Anderson (UCLA) and Lauren Herring (Georgia), were left standing.
Players took the court for quarterfinal doubles action to begin Friday, where the No. 6, 7 and 8 seeds fell victim to strong challengers. North Carolina's Caroline Price and Whitney Kay followed up yesterday's upset with an 8-6 triumph against sixth-seeded Maria Belaya and Jeltje Loomans (William & Mary). With the win, the Tar Heel duo set up a semifinal clash with Anderson and Jennifer Brady of UCLA, who knocked off seventh-seeded Stefania Hristov and Cristina Stancu (Texas A&M).
Stanford's Kristie Ahn and Carol Zhao earned their spot in the final four with an 8-5 win over the Columbia pair of Bianca Sanon and Kanika Vaidya. Their opponents in the semifinals will be Giuliana Olmos and Zoe Scandalis (USC), who ripped off their sixth straight win over Samantha Adams and Kenna Kilgo (Texas Tech), the No. 8 seeds.

North Carolina's Jamie Loeb inched one win closer to becoming the second straight freshman to reach the finals at Riviera with wins over Zsofi Susanyi (California), the No. 4 player in the nation, and Ahn, the No. 13 player in the country. Loeb has dropped just one set in six matches in California, and has only surrendered eight games in the second set so far in the tournament.
Herring spoiled Tar Heel Hayley Carter's chances of playing her teammate in the semifinals, coming back from a set down to defeat the promising freshman. Herring cruised past Kyle McPhillips of UCLA in straight sets to garner a spot in the semis opposite Loeb.
Qualifier Cristina Stancu of Texas A&M continue her bid to become the first Aggie to ever reach the finals at Riviera by besting Emina Bektas (Michigan), who was coming off a 6-2, 6-0 dominating upset of No. 4 seed Anett Schutting of California. Stancu took the first set 7-6, allowing Bektas only one point in the tiebreaker, before cruising to a 6-1 decision in the second set.
Beatrice Capra started off the day by rolling over Petra Niedermayerova (Kansas State), 6-1, 6-0. Her next opponent was the top-seeded Anderson. Capra came out of the gates hot, grabbing the first break, but Anderson stormed back to take the set, 7-5. The Bruin broke early in the second set for a 2-0 lead and looked to have control of the match.

Capra, who advanced to the third round of the 2010 US Open, fought back to level the match at a set apiece. Anderson hit her stride in the third set, racing out to a 4-0 lead with two breaks, but Capra refused to give in and broke back for 4-1. With Anderson serving for the match at 5-1, Capra staved off two match points before Anderson was able to claim victory. Anderson, a junior and defending National Indoor Intercollegiate Singles Champion, will face Stancu in the semifinals.
Tomorrow's singles semifinals begin at 9 a.m., followed by the doubles semifinals at 1 p.m. Tune in to Radio Tennis, as they continue live broadcasting the exciting action.
