Top Five Doubles Teams Bow Out on Day One of Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships

The day kicked off with first-round doubles play, followed by the first round of singles and then the Round of 16 in doubles to determine the eight quarterfinalists. All seeded doubles teams received a first-round bye and did not play in the morning session, which began at 9 a.m. PST.
Four duos that made their way through qualifying were victorious in round one, including Giuliana Olmos and Zoe Scandalis of USC, who defeated Mary Anne Macfarlane and Erin Routliffe (Alabama), 8-2. The USC pair did not have a good start to the tournament, losing in the first round of pre-qualifying, but was awarded a “lucky loser” bid into the qualifying draw. Olmos and Scandalis rode the momentum they gained in qualifying to knock out the third-seeded Oklahoma team of Hermon Brhane and Whitney Ritchie, who were ranked No. 4 in the ITA Preseason Doubles Rankings.

The Stanford duo of Kristie Ahn and No. 1 freshman Carol Zhao were also lethal in doubles play, making quick work of the tournament’s top seed and No. 2 ranked team in the country, Kate Fuller and Silvia Garcia of Georgia, in the Round of 16.
North Carolina showed some doubles prowess on Thursday also, as Caroline Price and Whitney Kay teamed up to upend the second-seeded team of Emina Bektas and Brooke Bolender (Michigan), the No. 3 team in the nation.
In addition to that, the Tar Heel freshmen continued to make noise in singles play. Jamie Loeb and Hayley Carter both made it all the way from pre-qualifying to garner spots in the main draw, and both Loeb and Carter registered wins on Thursday. Loeb knocked out fellow qualifier Chanelle Van Nguyen (UCLA), 7-5, 6-0, while Carter took it to Aleksandra Josifoska of UNLV, dropping only three games.
In other singles action, the top five seeds held their own, but the 6-8 seeds succumbed to the upset bug. Petra Niedermayerova (Kansas State) made quick work of seventh-seeded Krista Hardebeck of Stanford, the sophomore who notably fought back from down 5-1 in the second set to win a three-set thriller and earn the Cardinal a spot in the NCAA Team Championship match. Stanford went on to capture the NCAA Title.

Arguably the biggest upset of the day came in the second group of singles matches, when 2012 singles runner-up Julia Elbaba of Virginia was bested by Pleun Burgmans (Auburn), 6-3, 7-6(4). Elbaba made headlines last year at Riviera as a freshman, knocking out the top seed in the opening round en route to the finals.
Tomorrow’s action will again get underway at 9 a.m., with the doubles quarterfinals first on court, followed by Round of 16 singles action. Tune in to Radio Tennis, as they continue live broadcasting courtside.
