TEMPE, Ariz. – The third annual Finance Cup, pitting Team USA versus Team Europe, takes place Saturday, April 1, on Fisher Island in Miami, Florida. The Finance Cup is a spirited, yet friendly competition, that brings together former college and professional tennis players that are now currently working in the world of finance.
The 2017 edition of the Finance Cup will break the current tie that exists between the two teams, with Team USA scoring a victory in the inaugural event in 2015, and Team Europe winning on its home soil in 2016.
Jeffrey Appel, captain of Team USA, said part of the idea behind the Finance Cup was to pair the event with a major professional tennis event.
“The first year we had the Finance Cup coincide with the finals of the US Open,” said Appel. “Last year’s event took place alongside Wimbledon. We wanted to make the Finance Cup part of a guys weekend; selecting places that are fun, around a major tennis event and easy access in terms of air travel.”
Aside from the competition, another intriguing element of the Finance Cup is the pairing of players from different age groups, the comradery and the older players mentoring the younger participants.
“We are trying to set up an infrastructure that helps young tennis players embark upon the world of finance, because we all understand the sacrifices one makes for the game of tennis,” said Appel. “We spend a lot of time mentoring young people. We can make some introductions and provide guidance, and all of that can go a long way. If we can help the younger players, it’s a big success.”
One of the players to benefit from the mentoring is Mac Styslinger. A 2016 graduate of the University of Virginia, Styslinger was part of three Cavalier national championship teams (2013, 2015 and 2016) and also won an NCAA Doubles national championship.
“It’s been great to hear and receive advice from the guys that are a part of the Finance Cup,” said Styslinger, who works for Fidus Partners. “This event is a great networking tool, and it’s a fun tournament with a great group of guys.”
