SEATTLE, Wash. – Monday’s final of the 2018 National Division I Men’s Team Indoor Championship at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle, Washington will be the first time No. 1 Wake Forest and No. 7 UCLA have met in the history of their programs. Wake Forest has never been to an ITA Indoor final while UCLA will be appearing in one for the eleventh time.
The Demon Deacons came out hot looking to end No. 5 Stanford’s six-game win streak against top-25 opponents with a quick sweep of doubles. Borna Gojo and Skander Mansouri took down Tom Fawcett and Axel Geller 6-3 while Petros Chrysochos and Bar Botzer blanked David Wilczynski and Timothy Sah 6-0 to give Wake Forest a 1-0 lead into singles play.
Chrysochos blazed through his match against Axel Geller, winning 6-4, 6-3 to put Wake Forest ahead 2-0. Stanford’s David Wilczynski answered back moments later, putting down Christian Seraphim 6-4, 6-2 to bring the Cardinal within one at 2-1.
Stanford was able to even things up with Eric Fomba’s straight-set victory over Bar Botzer 7-5, 7-5 as matches on courts one, three, and five headed into third sets.
Julian Zlobinsky broke the tie for the Demon Deacons by defeating William Genesen 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 after coming from behind in the third set. Shortly thereafter, the Cardinal’s Sameer Kumar finished off Skander Mansouri 6-4 in the third set. Kumar had taken the second set 6-3 after dropping the first set 6-7 (10).
All eyes turned to Wake Forest’s Borna Gojo and Stanford’s Tom Fawcett on court one to see who would take the intensely close match. Gojo dropped the first set to Fawcett 3-6, but came back strong to win two set tiebreaks 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) to win the match for Wake Forest.
Before the excitement of the Wake Forest match, UCLA defeated No. 6 Texas A&M 4-2 in a match that saw Martin Redlicki, the top-ranked player in the Oracle ITA Rankings, defeat Patrick Kypson 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6).
The Bruins jumped out to an early lead with a strong showing in doubles to go up 1-0. The Aggies evened the score with a victory by Carlos Aguilar, but failed to capitalize as Logan Staggs and Keegan Smith quickly extended the Bruin lead to 3-1. AJ Catanzariti answered, bringing the Aggies within one before Redlicki’s victory advanced the Bruins to their eleventh ITA Indoor final appearance.
