TEMPE, Ariz. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association is excited to announce that the University of Washington will serve as host to the 2019 ITA Division I National Women’s Team Indoor Championship. It is the first time in the event’s history that competition will take place in the Pacific Northwest.
“The ITA is thrilled to be heading back to Seattle next year for ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship,” said ITA Director of Championships, Cory Brooks. “The University of Washington, under the leadership of men's head coach Matt Anger and their tremendous support staff, has successfully hosted the men's event eight times over that last 30 years. With that existing foundation, we're thrilled to now bring the women's event to Seattle for the first time! In her short time at Washington, Robin Stephenson has worked hard to get the women's tennis program back into the national conversation and hosting this prestigious event will only aid in those efforts.”
The 2019 event will run from February 8th through February 11th, and will feature 16 of the top teams in Division I. The Huskies are automatically slotted into the field by virtue of hosting the event, while the remaining 15 teams will be determined by advancing through the 2019 ITA Kick-Off Weekend, held January 25-29, 2019.
“We are thrilled to have been selected to host the National Indoor Championships in 2019 here at UW. It is a privilege to host such a prestigious event and we are looking forward to welcoming some of the best programs around the country to Seattle,” said Washington women’s tennis head coach Robin Stephenson. “I am personally excited for our team to play this event at home and for our entire tennis community to be able to come out to support us and take in the best that college tennis has to offer. We will make sure to put on a first-class event and are looking forward to working with the ITA to make it a great experience for everyone involved.”
The 2018 ITA Division I National Women’s Team Indoor Championship took place in Madison, Wisconsin, and saw the No. 3 seed North Carolina Tar Heels defeat No. 4 Pepperdine 4-2 in the final to win the tournament for the third time in the last six years.
