Roger Follmer of Washington (Mo.) and Maxanne Retzlaff of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Calif.) are this year's Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Coaches of the Year for NCAA Division III men's and women's tennis, respectively. Follmer and Retzlaff highlighted last night's award presentations during the NCAA Division III Championship banquets in Fredericksburg, Va. (men), and Santa Cruz, Calif. (women).
This year's other national award winners for Division II tennis are as follows (men's winner listed first):
ITA National Senior Player of the Year - Brian Waldron of Middlebury (Vt.) and Kristen Raverta of Amherst (Mass.)
ITA National Rookie Player of the Year - Michael Goodwin of Emory (Ga.) and Chelsea Rauck of William Smith (N.Y.)
ITA National Player to Watch - Daniel Greenberg of Williams (Mass.) and Jenna Mezin of Wellesley (Mass.)
ITA/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship Award - Nathan Edmunds of Middlebury (Vt.) and Lindsey Palen of Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.)
Emory beat previously unbeaten Washington & Lee (Va.) 5-1 Friday night to win its fourth straight (and fifth overall) NCAA women's championship. The match was delayed several hours due to rain in Santa Cruz. Goodwin, the ITA National Rookie Men's Player of Year, helped Emory to the men's title, beating Middlebury 4-1 in Fredericksburg. The title for Emory was its second; it also won the title in 2003.
Wilson/ITA National Men's Coach of the Year Follmer led Washington to an 18-3 record, its fifth straight NCAA appearance and the No. 9 spot in the Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings. Retzlaff is named Wilson/ITA National Women's Coach of the Year after leading CMS to the NCAA semifinals this week (and a third-place finish) and a 20-4 overall record.
ITA National Senior Women's Player of the Year Raverta has earned ITA All-America honors each of the past three seasons. She was also named NESCAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Year after posting a 17-2 record. Middlebury's Waldron is a three-time ITA All-America and was 25-3 entering this week's NCAA final eight. He was named the NESCAC's Men's Player of the Year.
Williams' Greenberg and Wellesley's Mezin receive the ITA Player to Watch Awards, which go to a men's and women's player who has an outstanding season, not yet won a national singles title, and is expected to perform at a high level the rest of his or her career.
William Smith's Rauck went 25-5 this season including a 16-match win streak. The first WS player to qualify for the NCAA singles tournament since 1991, she was also named Liberty League Player and Rookie of the Year.
Middlebury's Edmunds and Gustavus Adolphus's Palen are this year's ITA/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recipients. This award goes to a player who has exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
